About Fluoride
Bringing fluoride to Brockton is a healthy investment in our community’s future.
Fluoride occurs naturally in nearly all water and is in much of the food we eat and drink. Water is “fluoridated” when a public water system adjusts the fluoride to a level that is most beneficial for preventing tooth decay, either by lowering the amount of fluoride in the water or increasing it.
There is nearly 70 years of research demonstrating the safety and effectiveness of community water fluoridation.
Everyone in your family (from small children to grandparents) will benefit from water fluoridation.
Why bring fluoride to Brockton?
Sixty-six percent of 35-44 year olds in MA have lost at least one tooth, and 14% of adults 65-74 have lost all of their teeth. In Brockton, over 300 people are on the wait list for dental care at the Brockton Neighborhood Health Center and their oral health condition continues to worsen while they wait. Additionally, dental decay is the most common childhood disease, four times more common than asthma. Community water fluoridation is one of the key strategies to address these oral health problems.
